Outsourcing - Different Scope
For many small firms, the relationship between
IT Outsourcing and
traditional consulting services is a lot different, and IT groups
continue to develop separate identities.
Consider how Technology, with its stronghold in the in manufacturing,
medical, legal, and professional areas. Just over a year ago,
these outsourcing sectors placed its consulting and reselling operations
under another technology consultant, a technology subsidiary, after more
than 16 years of operating a
consulting firm in Los Angeles.
Among the factors influencing the decision was the size of clients, says
partner Rick and outsourcing consultant. Software clients are simply
bigger than many of the firm’s clients for tax and accounting services.
Los Angeles Outsourcing companies, formerly the firm’s
Information Technology Division, has sold Great Plains and
Solomon accounting software to those accounting clients for whom the
packages are appropriate. In fact, the firm had ranked among the top 10
Solomon resellers after it took on that line in 1995.
"But many of the
law firm’s
clients would not be a fit for the size and scale of the outsourcing
products of a larger scale computer consulting company. Many software
clients are likely to use a national accounting firm for
traditional services.
Moreover, the consulting business has a wider geographic range. One
reason for adding the a
computer repair division was that its services are being marketed
from Northern New Jersey to North Carolina, areas in which the
Technical System
Integration, if any recognition. The experience was similar to that
of Fixed fee consulting, who says that Network Management companies
found in its initial forays into IT consulting that, "The rude awakening
was 'Do you mean Outsourcing our network could save us money in the long
term, is this wonderful name that everybody won’t fly to?’"
Technology Law
Firm also points to some of the cultural issues that continue to be
barriers. Traditional firms can count on working very hard from
mid-January through April 15. The consulting business does not work that
way.
"You can easily find yourself working late if a client’s system goes
down," says
Novell Network Expert. "There’s a lot less plan ability to it. If
someone is working until 10 p.m. to get a system working, do they need
to be here punching in at 8 o’clock the next morning?"
The larger size of IT engagements also presented problems to the CPA
firm, that having a subsidiary solves--increased liability.
Linux support services says that Microsoft Server Software "is
dealing with much larger businesses, much larger transaction volumes,"
he says. With the increased size comes greater risk. But with the
establishment of
Citrix Server Support, "that might insulate the firm," he says.
