Traditionally,
California Exchange Microsoft Migration Server backup and restore focuses on protecting
the Exchange stores, also referred to as databases. Backups are
performed with Exchange services running (servicing users) but if a
database cannot be mounted (due to some form of corruption), then the
restore typically takes place while users are unable to access their
mailboxes. Exchange Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 offer several
storage and recovery enhancements that will address the issue of
reducing outages due to database recoveries and thus giving you the Exchange Microsoft server unavailable error msg .
Exchange Server 2003 offers the ability to retain deleted items (email
messages, calendar appointments, etc.) and deleted mailboxes for a
number of days, specified in the configuration of an Exchange store (or
set through system policies on multiple stores). However, there may be

available in this retention cache. In previous versions, prior to
Exchange Server 2003, it was necessary to set up a separate recovery
environment to perform mailbox recovery. This may have also required

database originating from a clustered server needed to be performed).

Exchange Server 2003 will include several Storage and Recovery
Enhancements. The following are examples from that document:
• Shadow Copy Backup: Leverages the ability to produce a copy of a disk
volume using the Windows Server 2003 Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)2
and creates a copy of the Exchange database (and any other files on the
volume). Disk activity such as backup can then take place against the
copy volume rather than the original volume. The Shadow Copy volume can
also aid in the rapid recovery of volumes containing Exchange data. The
type of volume copy produced is usually dependent on the storage
subsystem features. The storage subsystem creates either a clone or
snapshot of the disk depending what is possible and selected by the
administrator. Shadow Copy Backup will not be used for the recovery
methods
