Microsoft has developed a number of tools and services that can simplify the migration process. In addition, there are a number of third-party migration tools and services that can be considered as well.

Microsoft provides migration tools and services for customers in two places:

·         NetWare connectivity services—These are included with the Windows 2000 operating system.

·         NetWare interoperability and migration tools and services—These are included in a separate product, Services for NetWare (v.5).

The Windows 2000 operating system includes important NetWare connectivity services that are useful in achieving NetWare interoperability and migration. These integrated services both complement and help implement the components included in Services for NetWare.

Services for NetWare version 5 (which refers to the version of Services for Netware and not the NetWare 5 product) provides the interoperability services that actually synchronize or migrate information, files, and functionality between NetWare and Windows 2000. The interoperability services included with the Windows 2000 operating system, in contrast, include what are more accurately described as connectivity services that facilitate communication between NetWare and Windows 2000, but do not synchronize or migrate that information.

The NetWare component services included with each are reviewed below.

Connectivity Services

Three key connectivity services included in the Windows 2000 Server operating system facilitate cross-platform communication:

·         NWLink

·         Client Services for NetWare

·         Gateway Services for NetWare

NWLink

NWLink is an implementation of the IPX/SPX protocol used in NetWare networks. NWLink allows computers running the Windows 2000 operating system to communicate with other Windows 2000 based computers or with NetWare servers.

NWLink is fully compatible with NetWare IPX/SPX and provides efficient communication between both clients and servers.

A Windows 2000 Server-based computer configured with NWLink can be used as an application server for NetWare clients. Microsoft NWLink is a Network Device Interface Specification (NDIS)-compliant version of the IPX/SPX protocol, the protocol used by Novell NetWare networks. NWLink also gives NetWare clients access to applications for Windows 2000 Server such as Microsoft Exchange
