Why do the computers need to be upgraded to Win 2000? They all run
Win 95 and 98 now ... why do they need to be upgraded?
There are two main reasons why you should upgrade from Windows 9X to
Windows 2000; 1) Network security and 2) stability. Because the decision
has been made to open up the company's computers to the Internet on a
full time basis, security is a now a mission critical concern. Windows
9X has very low level security that makes it easy to break into. Windows
2000 was built on Windows NT technology, which has excellent security
control. The second reason, stability, is important for the ease of use,
stress level, and productivity of the staff. I have no doubt that the
workstations that have Windows 9X installed need to be restarted on a
regular basis if not on a daily basis. Windows 2000 removed most, if not
all of the reasons why the operating system needs to be restarted or
"freezes".
What is Outlook 2000? Why would it be helpful to the company?
Outlook 2000 is a scalable e-mail sending/receiving program. Built into
Outlook is a personal calendar as well as a company wide calendar for
posting things that need to be done. Outlook is relatively easy to use
and has some advanced features for use later. Outlook will allow each
person in the company to access their individual company e-mail so your
company will be able to communicate more effectively.
Exchange E-mail Server is the application that enables your company
to have company specific e-mail addresses and calendar. It coordinates
all of the individual Outlook e-mail and calendar functions and
integrates very well with Windows 2000. SMTP stands for Simple Mail
Transfer Protocol. SMTP is the technical way that mail travels from one
computer to another.
DNS stands for Domain Name Service. DNS is the way that one computer
can find another computer over the Internet. MX is the e-mail routing
portion of the DNS list. The DNS setting tells computers on the Internet
that they are looking for your company, where to go and what computer
within your company is tasked with providing certain answers to computer
requests. These setting will need to be configured to work with Exchange
server.
